Windows AutoPilot Setup Guide

This guide will walk you through setting up your new work device using Windows AutoPilot โ€” Microsoft's automated device enrolment and configuration system. AutoPilot handles the heavy lifting: it connects your device to your organisation, applies security policies, and installs your apps, all without needing IT to be physically present.

Please read all the information on this page and then proceed to the next page where you will answer two quick questions โ€” you'll then be shown only the steps that apply to your scenario.

About AutoPilot Provisioning

There are two types of AutoPilot provisioning. The preferred method is agreed with Handsfree IT per customer โ€” the descriptions below outline the difference in time expectation.

Pre-Provision (White Glove)
Device config applied in advance. Skips to Account Setup only when you receive it and sign in.
โฑ 15โ€“30 minutes
Full Provision
Full setup covering all three phases: Device Preparation, Device Setup, and Account Setup. Default if Handsfree IT hasn't advised otherwise.
โฑ 30โ€“60 minutes
โœ… Pre-requisites

Whilst the setup process is largely automated, it does require user input at several points along the way. It's important that you remain physically present with your device throughout. If a step requiring your input is left unattended for too long, the setup process can time out โ€” which means the device will need to be reset and the entire process started again, which can cause large delays.

  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Plug in your charger. Setup can take a while โ€” if your laptop runs out of battery mid-process, the entire setup will need to be reset and started again, which can take a long time.
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Use ethernet where possible. A wired connection gives you the most stable and reliable setup experience. If you're using a docking station, check that it has an ethernet port โ€” not all docks do. If yours doesn't, Wi-Fi will work fine.
  • ๐Ÿ“ถ Ensure you have a stable internet connection with reasonable speed. Setup involves downloading software and policies from the internet โ€” a slow or intermittent connection can cause it to stall or fail.
  • โš ๏ธ Don't disconnect or move mid-setup. If you're on ethernet or a dock, keep it plugged in for the entire process. If you're on Wi-Fi, stay close to your router and don't switch networks.
  • Have your mobile phone to hand. If you're a new user or joiner, you'll need your phone to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app for MFA as part of this process. If you're an existing user your MFA is already configured, though you will still need your phone to approve a sign-in notification.
